Chapter 0 --Inheritance--

The clanging of shoes against the cold steel floor echoed down the main hallway of the research complex.  The walls on either side of the hall were lined with thick steel doors, like those of a prison.  Behind each door, one or two scientists toiled away endlessly with their work.  They passed from one instrument to the next, looking through the eyepieces, writing down results, and then repeating the the cycle.  This was the task that they were programmed to do for the sake of discovery; for the breakthroughs that placed Sliph Co. as the leading corporation in the world.  They heard the footsteps passing through the hall, but they never even glanced through the narrow window on their chamber doors to see who disturbed the sterility of their laboratory--time was money, and money runs the world.  Besides, if it did not concern them, it was of no value.  Soon the ringing of the footsteps faded back into the routine silence.

At the end of the hallway a delicate hand reached up to press the elevator button.  The steel doors of the elevator opened silently and two people entered.  One of them, a man who had recently celebrated his fortieth birthday, was straining to remain composed as anxiety gnawed through his bowls.  He ran his fingers through his graying hair.  The man scowled; it was thinner up top than it had been only last month.  He rubbed his chin, which was prickly with little scrub brush hairs (he tended to shave once every week or so), and put his other hand inside the pocket of his long white lab coat.  Beside him stood a young woman.  Though she was only five years out of college she had gained a high position in R-I Beta.  Her mousy brown hair fell to her shoulders and covered the side bands of her glasses.  Her lilth figure stood rigid as she waited for the elevator to reach the top floor.  Her green eyes watched the light which announced the currently floor pass from D to C to B and finally to A.

The elevator doors opened up and the two exited to another hallway.  As they walked towards a solid steel door at the end of the corridor, the lady address her companion without turning to him.

"What is the status of the situation, Dr. Borlgio?"

"Research Institute Alpha has been completely eradicated, Dr. Gamai.  The terrain is flattened for a quarter of a mile from the center of R-I Alpha,"  replied the scrubby man.

"And the cause of this destruction was?"

"The source of the explosion remains unknown, but the emergency data transfer system had been initiated.  Maybe the black box data will help explain this accident."

        "We shall see."

Dr. Gamai removed a set of keys from a latch on her belt.  She grasped a large steel key between her fingers and plunged it into the lock.  She turned the knob and entered a large room filled with rows of networked computers and bathed in the purplish glow of florescent lights.  The scrubby man followed close behind her, eager to learn what secrets were held there.  He slowly worked his way through the rows of computers, much to Gamai's annoyance.

"Could you quit doddling?  You are wasting my time," she growled.

"Sorry miss, I don't mean to slow you down" apologized Dr. Borlgio.  "Have you already recovered the the security footage?"

"Yes, but only twenty nine seconds worth.  That was all that was transmitted before the connection was lost.  Watch closely--your future is in this film."

Dr. Borlgio hunched over the back of Dr. Gamai's chair and starred at the screen.  His eyes shone with curiosity and he held his breath as Dr. Gamai played the video clip.  His gaze grew more intense as the blackness of the screen faded away to images of a group of scientists speaking with a creature unlike any he had ever seen before.  The creature at first just watched the scientists, but Dr. Borlgio could see in its face the tension building inside of it.  Finally, with it's face contorted with anger, its eyes flashed blue, and the film ended.  His face grew pale as he watched these last few seconds of the tape; he knew he had just seen what the 9 scientists of R-I Alpha had seen in the last moments of their lives.  A chill shot down his spine and he felt sick.  Slowly, he turned to Dr. Gamai.

"What...what was that thing?"  he stammered.

"It is proof of Alpha's success," she answered coldly.

"You mean it is a man-made life form?  A biological invention?"

"Exactly.  They succeeded in doing so, but they paid a great price for project 'Mewtwo,'" she said smiling.  "However, it wasn't for nothing; they have left us with a great inheritance."
Dr. Gamai stiffed a laugh as she opened a different window and moved away from the computer screen.  Dr. Borlgio looked down at the flashing white text against the black screen.

"Project 'Mewtwo':  Data Transferred 100%"
